  • Position Responsibilities

    IPS is hiring and looking for a talented Lead Plumbing and Fire Protection Designer to join our growing team at our Irvine, CA office. Our clients are primarily in the life sciences (pharmaceutical, biotechnology, nutraceutical, etc.) so experience in this area is essential. This position has an immediate start. Relocation assistance is available. 

     

    The Lead Designer and Fire Protection Engineer will provide design and construction coordination on design/build projects.  Act as a liaison between the architect/engineer team and field construction team and be a point person with field staff on all design-related issues. This position will oversee the entire design process including but not limited to preliminary assessments, concept creation, design, and problem resolution and customer and vendor accessibility.  

     

    Job Duties & Responsibilities

    • Attends pre-bid meetings and assists the project team in evaluating commercial proposals.  Assesses the requirements of a project, break a project into tasks, and work with a Project Manager to determine scope of work, budget and staffing.  Write scope of work for mechanical or electrical design based on preliminary review and meetings with the client.
    • Manage the design schedule and milestone drawing dates. Coordinates the drawing progress, reports, client concerns with manager of design operations or the project manager 
    • Develops design concepts; prepares documents during design development phase. Corrects and updates design documents. Develops solutions to design problems. Prepare engineering studies and schematic design for new systems and analyze operation of existing systems.
    • Ensure acceptable levels of quality and checks for coordination of work to assure documents reflect design intent and necessary coordination.  Coordinate all aspects of project document completion within company and externally with clients and other design professionals.
    • Coordinates design work with related engineering disciplines. Attend job and construction meetings and participate in the coordination of the work.  
    • Creates and conducts annual performance reviews for assigned staff. Applies strategic thinking to workforce planning. Fosters the education and development of design staff and acts as resource for design questions.
    • Prepares cost estimates that may be required to support requests for additional engineering funds or to support value engineering activities.
    • Special projects as assigned.

    Qualifications & Requirements

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Architecture.
    • Minimum of ten (10) years previous design experience.  Pharmaceutical, biotech, nutraceutical, etc. industry experience is strongly preferred.
    • Ability to plan, organize, supervise, and coordinate technical work.
    • Demonstrated project management experience.
    • Registered Professional Engineer is a plus.
    • Must be proficient in the use of computer for design and understand CAD operations, including Revit.
    • Knowledge of all aspects of plumbing and fire protection systems including sanitary and vent systems, storm systems, process waste systems, lab and vent systems, domestic water systems, process and lab gas systems, sprinkler design and wet/dry/pre-action systems. Must be able to produce calculations for these systems.
    • Strategic planning abilities including structured problem solving skills, strong communication skills, team building and staff development skills.
